BOBA QUEST GAME

Boba Quest is a fun, casual indie game combining traditional gameplay with Augmented Reality (AR). Boba Quest`s vision is to capture a cozy, uplifting & adventurous game that doubles as a way of making real life friends and chaotic boba creations. Boba Quest (AR) aims to integrate actual cafes to form partnerships and boba inspired community events. Boba Quest is currently in development by Viridian Studios Inc. and will be available on PC, Mobile and Nintendo Switch to play with friends worldwide.

CHALLENGE

As a growing start-up, the challenge was to design a brand identity for Boba Quest that establishes a recognizable brand presence while allowing space for Boba Quest to grow and evolve.  The brand design must be flexible to allow Boba Quest to exist in several contexts: mobile & console gaming, digital (social media, website), print & production (in-store presence, events, merchandise). Using design, I strived to  create memorable and unique experiences for players and the community.

My process included research, concepting, and designing, and production while working closely with the Boba Quest Team.

SETTING THE FOUNDATION









I established the brand identity for Boba Quest by creating the logotype, logomark, color palette and illustrations. Boba Quest wants to give players a cozy, joyful and adventurous experience so I was inspired by various RPG games that had a bubbly twist! Boba Quest's mission is to encourage people to get outside and explore the world through gaming, I chose blue to be Boba Quest's hero color, inspired by California`s sunny blue skies. As the game evolves with its vibrant environments & characters, the color palette is meant to set the mood while letting game motifs and characters take center stage.







MARKETING / BRAND EXPERIENCE

PRE-LAUNCH GAME DEMO, EVENT DESIGN

The Boba Quest Pre-launch Game Demo event hosted over 100+ people at Woodside Palo Alto. Owners from local cafes, gaming and foodie influencers had the opportunity to test and share the game.  Working with Viridian Studios Inc., I mapped out brand touchpoint assets that were needed–such as wayfinding, signage, photo-ops, brochures and memos to create this experience. I concepted, designed, prepared the files for production and helped execute a successful Game Demo event.



Boba Quest Cafe, Statement Piece. This structure was designed to be a statement piece for the pre-launch event by providing a Boba Quest Cafe themed photobooth. I was responsible for drafting the concept of the structure, designing the set & props, providing production files and sourcing decor material for the booth. Constructed by @decorinabox. Character illustrations by Hikari.

GAME DEMO EXPERIENCE

I worked on the game demo experience with the Boba Quest Team, outlining the experience flow and the required print collateral. I designed wayfinding signage, vertical banner, team cards, “How to Play” infographic, player certificates, feedback questionnaire and goodie bags.


Players would line up at the game demo waiting room at their assigned game demo time slot. While waiting to demo the game, each group would come up with a team name and be able to participate in a couple of mini game challenges and learn some facts about the Boba Quest game. In the demo room, I had a simple infographic on how to play stationed at each game demo laptop.  After trying out the game, players received a game certificate for being the first people to try out Boba Quest! The player with the highest score won a grand prize, a Nintendo Switch! After each group filled out a feedback questionnaire, they were  given goodie bags for completing the main quest of the event (testing the game)!






SOFT GOODS





PARTNERSHIPS

Boba Quest has partnered with boba tea shops including Bitter & Sweet, WanPo and Boba Guys in the San Francisco Bay Area Region. Following the release of the game, Boba Quest plans to partner with boba shops & cafes worldwide to provide a global experience for players, both in-store and through gaming. Partnerships include drink menu collaborations, in-store signage,  products & merch and events collaborations.
